In his official Statement, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat confirms that Journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was the victim of today’s car explosion in Bidnija which occurred at around 3pm.
Describing it as a “dark day for freedom of expression”, Joseph Muscat admits how DCG was his harshest critic on a political and personal level. Despite this, he said he could never justify this barbaric attack on civility and liberty of expression in our country.
He stated how in it is unfortunate moments like these were the power of democracy comes through and appealed that everyone’s rights and principles must be protected at all times, and everyone has the right to write and express what they like.
Joseph Muscat contacted newly elected Leader of the Opposition Adrian Delia with the information regarding this accident. They both agreed to postpone tonight’s discussion regarding the 2018 budget and instead, both leaders will be presenting a statement regarding this incident.
According to news sources, Daphne Caruana Galiza filed a police report 15 days ago stating that she was being threatened. Her blog has last been updated at around 2:35pm, a few moments before the incident occurred.
The political blogger who gained infamy and popularity throughout the years, Daphne Caruana Galizia, was just reported dead in a car bomb in Bidnija which happened earlier today. The car exploded at roughly 3pm outside her family home.
The Prime Minister is said to be releasing a press statement shortly.
