Following months of ongoing hard work, Gender Equality Malta has decided it’s time to hold a joint celebration of graduation month and the morning after pill success, to unwind for a night and recharge for many more projects to come. That’s why we’re inviting you to come over to the Anvil Pub in Paceville on Saturday 12th November for some themed drinks and party games.
In anticipation of GEM’s Drink Night, we’ve compiled a list of gender equality drinks which perfectly encapsulate youth activism and would exist in an ideal world, two of which you will be able to order on the night!
1. The GEMs
This would be the ultimate tray of happiness with a mix of shots of your choice. What better way to replicate that warm tingly feeling we get from our Insite and GEM families?
2. The Suffragette
The Suffragettes knew how to make their presence known and wouldn’t stand to be ignored anymore. How could you ignore this giant beauty of a pitcher? In a perfect world, you could order a Suffragette for a large pitcher of vodka coke to share with your friends (or not, you little alcoholic you).
3. Susan Baileys Anthony
A woman who was willing to be thrown in prison for trying to vote and made her way onto a US dollar coin deserves a chocolaty reward. Susan B. Anthony insisted she shouldn’t be given special treatment and should be prosecuted just like any man who broke the law. You go, Susan!
4. Long Island Iced Equali-tea
There’s no justification for this. We just really love puns.
5. Margarita Thatcher
The debate on whether or not Margaret Thatcher can be considered to have been a feminist continues, however the first female British Prime Minister insisted that people should be promoted equally according to merit.
6. Rosé the Riveter
We couldn’t forget to pay tribute to the historic poster of Rosie the Riveter which reminded people that no profession is exclusive to one gender.
7. Rosé Parks
We love Rosé so much, we just had to mention it twice. GEM is an organisation that believes all forms of social inequality are interrelated. So how could we forget the famous Rosa Parks who refused to give up her seat on public transport on the basis of her skin colour?
8. Consensual Sex on the Beach
This drink speaks for itself. Remember the importance of consent, kids. When a certain President elect doesn’t get it, somebody’s got to.
9. Virgin-ia Woolf
Virginia Woolf wasn’t much of a drinker. If you don’t feel like drinking and prefer a virgin mock champagne, there’s something for you too!
10. About Thyme
As we here at GEM love to say, #ItsAboutTime for gender equality to grace the islands of Malta. Just mix some gin, fresh lemon juice, tonic or soda water, and two teaspoons of thyme syrup and voilà.
11. Laverne on the Rox
If Orange Is the New Black actress and transgender rights activist Laverne Cox were a drink, she’d be a whiskey on the rocks - strong, fiery, and leaves you in a fit of laughter (or tears) within an hour.
12. Justin Cointreau
What better way to celebrate men’s contributions to gender equality than through the loud and proud feminist Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau? Unfortunately, we don’t have any maple syrup drinks, so here’s this orange-based liquor instead.
13. Mountain Dew Me
We considered “Mountain Dew Whoever You Want As Long As It’s Consensual” but it was too long.
14. Ginder Equality
Need we say more?
15. Campaign Campari
An aperitif dedicated to our still ongoing morning after pill awareness-raising campaign (including an educational session on the 22nd of November), as well as several other campaigns we have lined up. This one’s for all of you guys who have supported us so far. Cheers!
