Last Saturday saw the success of the ‘Queer 360֯: Gender & Sexuality Diversity’ conference, organised by Betapsi Malta and Willingness. The aim of this conference was to present a multifaceted and interdisciplinary approach towards queer and LGTBIQ+ issues within the Maltese society and beyond.
The conference opened with a keynote address by Kevin McCann, Co-founder of the Irish Gestalt Training Institute, and a message from H.E. Mary Louise Coleiro Preca. These were followed by three sets of three concurrent workshops by various professionals who work with or within the Queer Community. Finally, the conference ended with a showing of the video campaign #OurChildrenAreAlright and a telling of the struggles of the Queer community throughout history in Malta by Gabi Calleja.
Among the topics discussed were same-sex intimate partner violence, queer individuals in the elderly community, ChemSex and the issues faced by LGBTIQ+ minors. A healthy discussion between professionals and participants was encouraged while shedding light on particular nuances which the participants held close to heart.
The conference was a tool for the participants to become more in touch with the queer community in Malta and functioned as a learning experience for everyone involved. The conference was met with positive feedback and encouragement to create more events of the sort.
The conference was held with the contriubtion of G-SAM, MGRM, WE ARE, LGBTIQ+ Gozo, Studenti Ħarsien Soċjali, Insite Malta and GħSL.
